How to Grow Onions & Garlic in Containers

It's pretty easy! Make sure you have pots or containers of a good size and at least 15 cm deep.

Onions

  • Mix potting soil and fertiliser into pots

  • Plant your organic onion sets about 5-10 cm deep in October. If you're planting in a raised bed, plant 9 onion sets per square foot.

  • Cover with an organic mulch - for example leaves, straw or bark

  • Place in a sunny position & feed regularly

The size of the onion depends on how many healthy green leaves it has, so keep it happy with water and more feeding for the best harvest. When the onion top starts to fall over, stop watering and start harvesting!

Garlic

  • Mix potting soil and fertiliser into pots

  • Split your organic garlic bulb into cloves

  • Plant 3 cloves in a 15cm diameter pot, 6 cloves if you have a 20cm diameter pot and 8-10 cloves if you have a 25 cm pot. If you're planting in a raised bed, plant 6 cloves per square foot.

  • Cover with an organic mulch - for example leaves, straw or bark

  • Place in a sunny position & feed regularly

Water your garlic during dry periods throughout the growing season, stopping watering completely during the last few weeks. Carefully remove any weeds as they appear.

When the lower leaves start to yellow, fold and lie flart on the ground it's time to harvest (usually around May/June).
