How to Grow sunflowers
3 steps to sucess!!!
Sow: April-May
Plant: June-July
Harvest: August-September
About:
Sunflowers are packed with nutrients – follow the instructions below or eat the entire seedling as a ‘microgreen’. Great to grow with children, they will brighten up any garden!
Sow
-
Choose a site or pot with moist but well-drained soil, in full sun.
-
Sow sunflower seeds from April to May, individually in 10cm pots of peat-free, multi-purpose compost. Plant out into the garden 45cm apart when all risk of frost has passed, from early June.
-
Or grow inside any time of year to seedling (microgreen) size in a sunny windowsill, chop and eat!
Care
-
Mulch if possible to keep moist and weed free. Keep an eye out for pests, weeds & disease & use natural methods to treat or prevent.
-
Protect new seedlings from slugs and snails.
-
You may need to stake the plant as it grows, especially in windy areas!
Harvest
-
The flower should appear in August. Harvest when you see the seeds fully developed within the flower head.
-
Wash microgreens before eating and store in fridge.
-
Seeds should be dried and then store in a cool dark place.
-
Crack the shell and eat raw or add to salads, stir-fries, breads and any dish you can think of!
